Ayres, Philip, 1638-1712 · 1695 · Augspurg : Bey Joseph Friderich Leopold ... · 46 pictures

A multilingual love-emblem book by the English writer Philip Ayres, issued at Augsburg in 1695 by Joseph Friderich Leopold with Latin, Italian, French and German mottoes and verses for educated readers across Europe. The 47 small copperplates each set one or two winged cupids acting out a conceit — gathering bees, bending saplings, drinking from a cup — inside a finely hatched landscape with distant villages, churches and cloud-streaked skies, giving designers compact vignette frames, foliage textures and a stock of putto poses.
