A collection of natural-history essays by Alfred Russel Wallace, issued by Macmillan in London in 1878 for educated general readers, on tropical climate and vegetation, animal coloration, and natural selection. The plates are sparse engraved line work: ruled grid charts plotting Batavia against London rainfall and temperature with italic hand-lettered captions, hatched silhouettes of branching forms, and a circular monogram ornament with stars and leaf sprays.
