Two centuries of costume in America, MDCXX-MDCCCXX
A two-volume social history of American dress from 1620 to 1820, written by Alice Morse Earle and published by Macmillan in New York and London in 1903 for general readers and antiquarians. The plates are halftone reproductions of colonial portraits, miniatures and surviving garments, giving heavy-wigged men in slashed sleeves, women in hoods, kerchiefs and lace cuffs, plus shoes, fans and needlework usable as period costume reference or soft-edged grey portrait stock.
