Two discourses. I. An essay on the whole art of criticism, as it relates to painting ... II. An argument in behalf of the science of a connoisseur; wherein is shewn the dignity, certainty, pleasure, and advantage of it
Jonathan Richardson's two essays on art criticism and connoisseurship, printed in London by W. Churchill in 1719 for collectors and picture-judging gentlemen. The plates here are typographic ornament rather than illustration: woodcut headbands of scrolling foliage with facing birds, urns and grotesque masks, and tailpieces built around a female bust on a pedestal flanked by acanthus and flowers.
