Joseph Ames's 1749 bibliography of early English printing, issued in London by W. Faden for antiquaries and book collectors, cataloguing books printed from 1471 to 1600. The plates copy fifteenth-century printers' devices, monograms and decorated initials in line engraving, giving designers blackletter ciphers, stippled initial grounds, knotwork strapwork and foliate roundels ready for lettering and ornament work.
