Undine
A 1909 London and New York gift-book edition of Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué's German water-spirit romance, retold by W. L. Courtney and illustrated by Arthur Rackham for adult and family buyers of holiday picture books. Muted olive and brown colour plates set figures among tangled roots, branches and waves, while pen-and-ink drawings reduce the same material to whipping hair, curling foam, fish and fine hatched line.
