The unknown quantity : a book of romance and some half-told tales
A collection of short stories and sketches by Henry Van Dyke, published by Charles Scribner's Sons in New York in 1912 for general adult readers, with a trade binding designed by Margaret Armstrong. The plates are small pen-and-ink headpieces and tailpieces, monogrammed GJ, in which winged putti, hooded and grinning figures, and shrouded forms emerge from thick acanthus and thistle foliage above a ruled baseline, useful as chapter ornaments, rules, and spot decoration.
