An Italian edition of Auguste Wahlen's illustrated survey of the manners, customs and dress of the world's peoples, issued in Turin in 1844 by Stabilimento tipografico Fontana with contributions from Nicolas Dally and Luigi Cibrario, aimed at general readers of popular ethnography. The plates are hand-coloured engravings of single standing figures in regional and ceremonial dress, set against bare ground with a little wall or shadow, giving designers clean cut-out silhouettes, flat saturated reds and greens, and close detail of sashes, headdresses, fur trim and embroidery.
