Iconologia, of, Uytbeeldinge des verstands
A Dutch edition of Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, published by Cornelis Danckerts in Amsterdam in 1717 as a reference of allegorical personifications for painters, printmakers, poets and emblem designers. The plates arrange nine small engravings to a page in a grid, each a numbered, captioned standing or seated figure with identifying attributes — mirrors, flames, cornucopias, wreaths, serpents, birds, peacocks, skulls — giving designers a ready stock of figure motifs, attribute vocabulary and repeatable grid layouts.
