Vanished towers and chimes of Flanders
A 1916 travel and architecture account by the American painter-illustrator George Wharton Edwards, published in Philadelphia for readers following the destruction of Belgian towns in the First World War. Colored lithographs and sanguine drawings of belfries, gatehouses, guild fronts and market squares, with soft crayon texture, warm brick reds against grey slate, and tiny figures giving scale.
