Veneres uti observantur in gemmis antiquis
A privately issued antiquarian album of erotic subjects supposedly drawn from ancient engraved gems, compiled by Pierre d'Hancarville and printed in 1771 under a false Leiden imprint for collectors of Greco-Roman antiquities. Each plate is a hand-coloured figure group in pale flesh tones on a black ground, ringed by concentric green and cream hatched borders that work as ready-made roundel and oval frames.
