The stones of Venice

Ruskin, John, 1819-1900 · 1851 · London, Smith, Elder, and co. · 40 pictures

John Ruskin's study of Venetian building, published in London by Smith, Elder and Co. from 1851 for British readers of architecture and art criticism. The plates combine Ruskin's own measured drawings and tonal studies of capitals, gabled porches, crocketed finials, window tracery and carved foliage, alongside line diagrams of wall bays on ruled grids, giving designers isolated Gothic ornament and construction schemas.
