Maier, Michael, 1568?-1622 · 1619 · Francofvrti : Typis Nicolai Hoffmanni, sumptibus Lucae Iennis · 5 pictures

A Latin treatise by the alchemist and Rosicrucian apologist Michael Maier cataloguing inventions and discoveries credited to Germany, printed at Frankfurt in 1619 by Nicolas Hoffmann for the publisher Lucas Jennis and aimed at scholarly readers. The woodcuts are typographic ornament rather than subject illustration: a circular printer's device of a flaming torch and wind-blown heads ringed by the motto ADVERSIS CLARIVS ARDIT, horizontal headpiece bands of scrolling foliage with birds, dragons and a central vase, and initial letters built from vines and small faces, all usable as borders, rules and drop caps.
