A French popular history of medieval and Renaissance military and religious life, compiled by Paul Lacroix (P. L. Jacob) and issued by Firmin Didot in Paris in 1873 for general readers and students of costume and manners. Its 393 wood-engraved plates copy illuminated manuscripts and early prints: crowded processions, coronations and altar scenes set inside architectural borders, historiated initials, patterned diaper backgrounds and banded costume detail usable as frames, vignettes and ornament.
