Kirkall, Elisha, 1682?-1742, Raphael, 1483-1520, Maratti, Carlo, 1625-1713 · 1722 · 9 pictures

A 1722 London print series in which Elisha Kirkall reproduced Raphael's Sistine Chapel tapestry cartoons, then held at Hampton Court, as chiaroscuro prints in red-brown ink for collectors, painters and drawing students. The plates imitate red-chalk drawing: crowded apostolic scenes staged like theatre, with hatched drapery, gesturing arms, stepped platforms and curtained backdrops, useful as monochrome figure groups, classical drapery studies and tonal crowd compositions.
