Carlo Ridolfi's life of the painter Paolo Veronese, printed in Venice by Matteo Leni in 1646 for readers and collectors following Italian artists' biographies. The illustrations are letterpress ornaments: woodcut initials filled with acanthus, lilies and a small grotesque figure, plus a symmetrical scrolled tailpiece, useful as drop caps, dividers and border motifs with heavy black line and visible printing wear.
