Tommaso Temanza's biographies of sixteenth-century Venetian architects and sculptors, printed by Carlo Palese in Venice in 1778 for antiquarians and students of art history. The plates here are letterpress ornaments: rocaille-framed initial capitals with flowering branches, and headpieces of paired doves in scrolled cartouches, usable as decorative initials, spot ornaments and section dividers.
