Giorgio Vasari's lives of Italian painters, sculptors and architects, reprinted in 1767 at Livorno and Florence for collectors and students of Renaissance art. The plates are engraved author portraits: bearded heads in oval frames set into architectural aediculae with pediments, herm figures, putti holding drawing boards, and lettered name tablets below, usable as ready-made cartouches and frame templates.
