Vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori e architetti
Giorgio Vasari's lives of the Italian painters, sculptors and architects, reissued in Siena in 1791 by the Pazzini Carli press with notes by Guglielmo Della Valle, for readers and students of art history. Each life opens with an engraved portrait head set in an oval frame on a stone pedestal, flanked by the artist's tools — palettes, brushes, squares, mallets, small statuettes — with garlands, masks and sphinxes above and below; useful for frame and cartouche forms, trade emblems and hatched engraving texture.
