Giorgio Vasari's lives of Italian painters, sculptors and architects, reissued in Siena in 1791 by Pazzini Carli with notes by Guglielmo Della Valle, for antiquarians and artists. Each life opens with an engraved portrait head in an oval laurel wreath, framed by hung palettes, brushes, compasses, mauls, garlands, winged sphinxes and putti, all in fine hatched line ready for use as decorative cartouches and blank name plaques.
