Giorgio Vasari's lives of Italian painters, sculptors and architects, reissued in Siena in 1791 by Pazzini Carli with notes by Guglielmo Della Valle, for readers and collectors of art history. The plates are engraved portrait heads in profile or three-quarter view set in oval frames on stone plinths, framed by swags, masks, sphinxes, putti and the tools of each trade — palettes, brushes, mahlsticks, compasses, mallets and statuettes — with blank cartouches ready for lettering.
