Giorgio Vasari's Lives of the Italian painters, sculptors and architects, reissued in Guglielmo Della Valle's annotated edition by Pazzini Carli in Siena, 1791, for antiquarians, artists and collectors. The plates are engraved head-and-shoulders portraits of individual artists set in oval frames above stone plinths, each surrounded by laurel, drapery, fret borders, allegorical figurines and the tools of the sitter's trade, usable as ready-made frame devices, cartouche templates and emblem vignettes.
