Wall and water gardens
Gertrude Jekyll's 1901 gardening manual on rock, wall and water planting, issued in New York by Scribner's for English and American garden owners and their designers. The plates are Jekyll's own halftone photographs: masses of alpines spilling over dry stone walls, ferns in rock crevices, pool margins under trees, all in soft grey-green tones useful as botanical texture, horizon-less backgrounds, and period photographic grain.
