The way to bliss : in three books
An alchemical treatise published in London in 1658, printed by John Grismond for Nathaniel Brook and issued by the antiquary Elias Ashmole from a manuscript attributed to John Everard, addressed to readers of Hermetic and chemical philosophy. The plates here are repeated impressions of the same woodcut headpiece band, in which a crowned Tudor rose, fleur-de-lis and Scots thistle sit among curling foliate scrollwork; the varying inking and wear give designers several states of one heraldic ornament strip for rules, borders and section breaks.
