George Spratt's obstetric atlas, issued in Philadelphia in 1848 for midwives and medical students, pairs descriptive text with dissected plates whose flaps lift to reveal successive layers of the pregnant body. Lithographs range from hard outline diagrams of the bony pelvis, keyed with letters, to hand-coloured sections of the gravid uterus in pink and grey, with fine engraved vessel networks.
