Observations on hydrophobia, produced by the bite of a mad dog, or other rabid animal : with an examination of the various theories and methods of cure, existing at the present day, and an inquiry into the merit of specific remedies : also a method of treatment best adapted to the brute creation : in a series of letters to a friend / by James Thatcher.
A medical treatise on hydrophobia and its treatments, written as letters to a friend by the Plymouth physician James Thacher and published in Massachusetts in 1812 for doctors and lay readers treating dog bites in people and livestock. The plates are few: a hand-colored botanical figure of Scutellaria lateriflora with a script caption naming it a cure for mad-dog bites, and a shaded oval engraving of a large brick institutional building, useful for period botanical line and hand-tint or vignette framing.
