Pre-historic times, as illustrated by ancient remains, and the manners and customs of modern savages / by John Lubbock.

John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury, Bull, N. C., active 19th century, St. Thomas's Hospital. Medical School. Library, King's College London · 1865 · London : Williams and Norgate, 1865. · 75 pictures

John Lubbock's 1865 archaeological survey, published in London by Williams and Norgate, compared excavated European remains with the tools and customs of living peoples for Victorian scientific readers. Wood-engraved figures show flint blades, polished stone axes, scrapers and arrowheads in multiple views, modelled with dense parallel hatching against blank grounds, giving designers isolated tool silhouettes and engraved stone textures.
