A French medical monograph by Charles Hortolès on the histology of nephritis, published in Paris and London by Baillière in 1881 for physicians and pathologists, with four text engravings and five chromolithographed plates by Gouget. The plates show microscope views of diseased kidney tissue printed in pink, ochre and olive inks on tinted paper, giving mottled cellular patterns and lettered tube-and-cyst diagrams usable as abstract textures or scientific ornament.
