A scholarly edition of two Ethiopic saints' lives, edited and translated by E.A. Wallis Budge and printed by W. Griggs in London in 1898 for collectors and orientalists, reproducing the illuminations of a Lady Meux manuscript. The chromolithographed plates copy Ethiopian church painting: flat fields of red, yellow, green and black, red-ruled borders, frontal wide-eyed figures in patterned robes, and tiered scenes of monks, funeral biers and domed buildings, useful for bold flat-colour palettes, patterned textile fills and stylised faces.
