A popular field guide to fungi by the British mycologist Mordecai Cubitt Cooke, issued in 1894 by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in London and New York for amateur collectors deciding what to eat and what to avoid. Eighteen colour plates group two to four species per page against bare paper, with hand-lettered common names, cutaway caps, gill undersides and soil-clotted stem bases in ochre, russet and olive washes; useful for isolated specimen silhouettes and a muted earth palette.
