Inside Out Library

Death's doings; consisting of numerous original compositions, in prose and verse, the friendly contributions of various writers; principally intended as illustrations of twenty four plates, designed and etched by R. Dagley / [Richard Dagley].

Richard Dagley · 1826 · London : J. Andrews and Cole, 1826. · 22 pictures

An 1826 London anthology of prose and verse by various contributors, written to accompany twenty-four plates designed and etched by Richard Dagley, issued by J. Andrews and Cole for a general reading public with a taste for the dance-of-death tradition. The etchings place a turbaned or hooded skeleton into everyday scenes — a sickroom, a study, a balcony courtship, a juggling contest with a sage and a demon — in fine outline with light hatching, giving designers memento mori figures, period costume, and furnished interiors.
