Doctor Comicus; or the frolics of fortune. A comic satirical poem, for the squeamish and the queer. In twelve cantos / By a surgeon. Illustrated with numerous plates.
A comic satirical poem in twelve cantos, published in London by Jaques & Wright in 1828 under the pseudonym "Modern Syntax" and illustrated with hand-coloured etched plates in the Rowlandson manner, sold to readers of the popular Doctor Syntax verse tours. The plates show crowded interiors of lecture rooms, parlours and apothecary shops, with knots of caricatured faces, chairs and bodies pitching over, and flat washes of blue, yellow, scarlet and green over spindly etched line — useful for period crowd groupings, exaggerated heads and limited-palette hand colouring.
