The Chinese opium smoker. Twelve illustrations; facsimiles of native drawings / with a translation of the original Chinese text accompanying them, and appendices.

1881 · London : S.W. Partridge, [1881?] · 9 pictures

A short anti-opium tract published by S.W. Partridge in London in 1881, reproducing twelve Chinese drawings with a translation of their accompanying text for British temperance and missionary readers. The hand-coloured plates trace a smoker's decline through garden courtyards, tiled verandahs, curtained beds and roadside shelters, giving designers pale washes of green and buff, tiled roof patterns, banana and pine foliage, and figures in loose robes.
