Joseph Hatton, Wallace, John · 1893 · Liverpool : Office of "Cope's tobacco plant", 1893. · 23 pictures

A promotional booklet issued by Cope's Tobacco Plant in Liverpool in 1893, pairing Joseph Hatton's life of Sir Walter Ralegh with a reporter's walk through a working tobacco factory, illustrated by John Wallace for the firm's smoking customers. The plates are tonal wood engravings of labour and trade: women stripping and sorting leaf at long benches, men levering hogsheads across a yard, and the Great Eastern Street saleroom hung with framed advertising prints, useful for period interiors, work clothing and crowd staging.
