A Latin inaugural medical dissertation by Johannes Scherbius, printed at Jena in 1790, arguing for the medicinal virtue of purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) before the university's medical faculty. Its single engraved plate shows the flowering spike in fine stipple and line, ringed by small numbered studies of calyx, stamens, petals and seed capsule, giving designers a plant portrait plus detachable botanical detail vignettes on bare paper.
