When old New York was young
Charles Hemstreet's 1902 popular local history, published by Scribner in New York, gathers sketches of vanished colonial and early-republic buildings for city readers curious about the streets they walked. The plates are pencil and wash drawings and wood engravings of gabled Dutch houses, taverns, churches and open roads with carriages, offering silhouettes of rooflines, fences, street furniture and small figure groups.
