The Buddhist Praying-Wheel
William Simpson, Simpson, William, 1823-1899 · 1896 · 4 pictures
A comparative study of the Tibetan prayer wheel and wheel symbolism in Buddhism, Hinduism and Europe, written and illustrated by the Scottish artist-traveller William Simpson and published in London in 1896 for antiquarians and students of religion. The plates mix pen drawings of wheel emblems, carved rosettes and water-driven cylinders on rocks with darker wood-engraved interiors of monks at a painted drum, giving designers rotary ornament, sketched machinery and figures copied from stone relief.
