William Gilbert of Colchester, physician of London, On the loadstone and magnetic bodies and on the great magnet the earth. A new physiology, demonstrated with many arguments and experiments ..
An 1893 English translation by Paul Fleury Mottelay of William Gilbert's 1600 Latin treatise De Magnete, reissued in New York by John Wiley & Sons for scientists and historians of magnetism. The 98 figures reproduce Gilbert's woodcut diagrams: heavy-outlined spheres, lettered reference points, small arrow-tipped compass needles and dense hatching, useful as schematic circle motifs and hand-cut diagram marks.
