The wonders of the heavens
A popular astronomy primer by the French writer Camille Flammarion, translated by Mrs. Winifred Lockyer and issued in New York by Scribner in 1871 for general readers and students. The plates are dark-ground wood engravings in which planets, comets, nebulae and star clusters are built from stippled white dots against solid black, offering reversed-out textures, crescent-lit spheres and grainy starfields for use as backgrounds or cut-out shapes.
