Wood sculpture
Alfred Maskell's Wood Sculpture, published by Putnam in New York in 1911, surveys carved wooden figures and ornament from medieval Europe onward for collectors, museum visitors, and students of the decorative arts. The plates are halftone photographs of single statues and reliefs against plain grounds — robed saints, seated Virgin and Child, tomb effigies with long drapery folds and inscribed bases — giving designers clean silhouettes, deep tonal modelling, and repeating fold patterns to cut out or trace.
