The works of Mr. Jonathan Richardson : consisting of I. The theory of painting, II. Essay on the art of criticism so far as it relates to painting, III. The science of a connoisseur
Collected art-theory writings by the English portrait painter and connoisseur Jonathan Richardson, reissued in London in 1773 by Thomas Davies for collectors, critics and students of the Royal Academy. The plates here are not pictures but letterpress fragments from tabular lists of painters, showing eighteenth-century roman and italic type with long s, bracketed columns of masters' names and genre notes such as "Hist. port. archit.", useful as period typography, table rulings and outsized curly braces.
