The world's painters and their pictures
A survey history of European painting written by Deristhe L. Hoyt and published by Ginn & Company in Boston in 1899, aimed at students and general readers following the schools from the Italian primitives onward. The 48 plates are soft, coarse-grained halftone reproductions of frescoes and panel paintings—crowd scenes with robed elders, haloed saints against open landscape, Madonna and Child groups, a veiled female bust—usable as low-contrast grey source material for collage, ghosted backgrounds, or halftone texture.
