Wunder, Wundergeburt und Wundergestalt in Einblattdrucken des fünfzehnten bis achtzehnten Jahrhunderts; kulturhistorische Studie
Eugen Holländer, a Berlin surgeon who wrote on medical history, assembled this 1921 Stuttgart study (F. Enke) of wonders, monstrous births and prodigies as recorded in German single-leaf broadsides from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries, addressed to physicians and cultural historians. The plates reproduce broadsheet woodcuts and later copper engravings: a winged, scale-legged demon standing in grass, wrestling beasts and griffins strung across a strip landscape of walled towns, a rayed sun with a human face, and contorted anatomies under blackletter text — useful for figure silhouettes, banner-shaped picture strips and hand-set caption blocks.
