XVIIme [i.e. dix-septième] siècle : lettres, sciences et arts, France, 1590-1700

Jacob, P. L., 1806-1884 · 1882 · Paris : Firmin-Didot · 310 pictures

A survey of French letters, science and art from 1590 to 1700, compiled by Paul Lacroix under the name P. L. Jacob and issued by Firmin-Didot in Paris in 1882 for general readers and collectors of cultural history. Its plates and text cuts are facsimiles after seventeenth-century engravings: court and academy interiors with tiled floors and draped baldachins, portrait cartouches framed by trumpeting angels and skulls, and headpiece vignettes of allegorical figures with telescopes, globes and scales — usable as ornament, frame and figure stock.
