Translated by John Callaway
A translation by Wesleyan missionary John Callaway of two Sinhalese poems on demon-exorcism and masquerade characters, printed in London in 1829 for the Oriental Translation Fund and aimed at European orientalist readers. Hand-coloured plates show standing demons and masked figures in frontal poses with striped and pleated skirts, fanged masks, swords, tridents, and small attendant animals, giving flat outlined bodies and dense line-pattern textiles.
