Zedelyke en stichtelyke gezangen
A book of moral and devotional songs by the Amsterdam etcher and Mennonite poet Jan Luyken, printed by Kornelis van der Sys in 1734 for Dutch Protestant readers who sang and meditated on emblem verse at home. The 32 small upright etchings pair everyday scenes—travellers on a rocky path, a corpse carried from a doorway, a deathbed watched by women, a man resting at a hut—with skies of ruled hatching and cherub-filled clouds, offering compact figure groups, drapery, and stock landscape and architectural backdrops.
