Zeiten der Kunst und der Religion

Valentiner, Wilhelm Reinhold, 1880-1958 · 1919 · Berlin Grote · 43 pictures

A German art-history essay by museum curator Wilhelm Reinhold Valentiner, published by Grote in Berlin in 1919, tracing art and religion from Akhenaton and Phidias through Gothic sculpture, Michelangelo, Titian and Ruisdael for educated German readers. The plates are coarse-screen halftone photographs of carvings and paintings, heavy in soft grey and black, showing draped cathedral figures, Egyptian portrait busts and dim crowded mythological canvases; useful for grainy tonal textures and cropped sculptural silhouettes.

Akhenaton, King of Egypt · Phidias, ca. 500-ca. 430 B.C · Wolfram, von Eschenbach, 12th cent · Michelangelo Buonarroti, 1475-1564 · Titian, ca. 1488-1576 · Ruisdael, Jacob van, 1628 or 9-1682 · Art -- History · Art and religion
