Zinnebeelden
A Dutch edition of Otto van Veen's Horatian emblem book, issued by Justus Danckerts in Amsterdam in 1683 with mottoes and verse in Latin, Dutch and French for readers schooled in classical moral philosophy. The 105 copperplate engravings set allegorical figures, gods descending on clouds, winged putti and moralized animals in classical courtyards and landscapes, built from dense parallel hatching and small stipple that yields usable figure cut-outs, cloud forms, emblem frames and architectural backdrops.
