Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge, a chemist working at Oranienburg, self-published this 1855 sequel to his Musterbilder, in which each copy carried actual paper chromatograms made by letting metal-salt solutions bleed through blotting paper, addressed to chemists and curious lay readers arguing that matter forms images on its own. The plates pair near-identical blooms of cobalt blue, rust brown and pale rose with scalloped, feathered edges on tanned paper, giving designers ready-made radial symmetries, dye-bleed gradients and stain textures alongside letterpress German captions.
