Ridgway, Robert, 1850-1929 · 1912 · Washington, D.C., The author · 8 pictures

A self-published color dictionary by ornithologist Robert Ridgway, issued in Washington, D.C., in 1912 to give naturalists and scientists a fixed vocabulary for describing plumage, flowers, and minerals. The plates are grids of hand-mixed painted swatches on gray card, each labeled in small serif type, useful as a period palette source and as a model for captioned specimen charts.
